About Me

Updated July 2010

My name is Mélanie. I was born at the very end of the 70′s in Orléans, in France (1 hour drive going south of Paris). I have been living in London since April 2006 and I have no plan for leaving the United Kingdom anytime soon. This country drives me crazy, but my home country drives me crazy too, so I guess I’m done looking for better places!
I am married to another migrant, who is originally from New Zealand. I love him so much that I married him twice: once in May 2008, in front of the registrar where we lived, and once in September 2008, in front of our families, in the little church by the river where I had been baptised 29 years earlier and where my parents married 31 years earlier. The most beautiful day of our lives (until our baby was born). Anyone interested in beautiful pics of a traditional french wedding can find them on my flickr.

Some say I am witty with a dry sense of humour and I do tend to take the piss a lot (to non-brits: that means make fun of people), but never in a nasty way (unless you are a nasty person). I am mostly kind and generous. I do have a bit of a temper and I can be very short-fused if I’m hungry and / or tired. I am a loner, but I am not sad about it. I also love the company of my friends, mind you! I am VERY shy and I’m always worried about bothering people. I hate speaking on the phone. I managed just with my Mum. I do love Skype a lot more, because I can read people’s reaction.

In a previous life, I used to be a web designer. I worked for a couple of big companies in the financial world, which had allowed me to create fancy pants websites for HUGE businesses with lots of money. Until they ran out of money. I was made redundant in April 2009, the same week I found out I was expecting a baby.
My husband and I decided that I could stay-at-home to take care of our starting family.

Our son, Lucas, was born on 11 December 2009. After a few months and lots of crafting, I decided to start my own business while taking care of our baby. That’s how the Little Fabric Store was created in June 2010. My family and my business are both my joy and pride.

I love all kind of crafts. Those I particularly enjoy are knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting. I am now looking into starting sewing seriously. And I’ve got good hope of getting a proper sewing machine soon.
I have been crafting for more than 20 years and I have always loved playing with threads and fabrics. When I was a young teenager, I wanted to be a fashion designer. Instead, I went to university to study law. And worked as a web designer. Go figure!

Besides crafting, I love cooking and coming up with my own recipes. I tend to use recipes in books as a starting point and inspiration rather than something I should follow to the letter (I’m a bit like that too when crafting). My favourite dishes are omelette (really, you can’t go wrong with an omelette), scallops with vegetables julienne and white wine and cream sauce (that’s the first dish I cooked for my husband!) and so many other I don’t dare to list them all (a few have been blogged here already!)

I played music when I was younger (flute and a little bit of saxophone) and I’d like to come back into it one day – I’ve got a brand new flute just waiting to be picked up and used. I do listen to a fair bit of music and I like about everything. Except rap music. I can’t stand rap music. My favourite genres are hard rock and glam rock. My favourite bands are Aerosmith, AC/DC and Queen. I’ve been lucky to have seen Aerosmith and AC/DC live. I also love Madonna. Nobody’s perfect, right?

I love movies – all kinds. When I was at university, I used to go to the movies twice a week and rent 5 movies a week. To give you an extent of my love for movies! My favourite movies are (in no special order) Star Wars, Gladiator, Fight Club, The Matrix Trilogy and Some Like It Hot and Gone With The Wind.

That’s all I can think about for now. Oh, and thanks for reading my blog. It makes me all fuzzy and warm inside (really it does!)
