I have finally finished my first quilt ever! Honestly, it has been a lot easier than what I expected. My result is not perfect, but for a first one, I find the results more than satisfactory!

It uses just over a fat quarter of 2 light and 2 dark fabrics and 2 fat eights for the binding (could have used 1 fat quarter but I wasn’t sure I would have enough and I loved the idea of a scrappy binding). It is about 70×60 cms (something like 30×25 inches?). It is all handsewn and hand quilted.

On this close-up, you can see that my points are not perfect, but I can live with that. I also had troubles with the binding on the non even sides: the inside angles are a bit rubbish, but the outside ones look good. I’m happy with it as it is.

On the back, I have appliquéd 3 hexagons flowers. The little smudge of pink is my name and date. I had troubles embroidering on the lawn cotton as it is vey fine and slippery. Plus, my needle was too big for the fabric and I should have used 1 strand instead of 2. Still, I like it. And the lawn cotton is very smooth and squish-able! I love how the quilting looks on the back, worth all the trouble. My stitches were not great, but I’m learning… and improving!
Now, it needs to go in the wash, and I hope the resulting crinkles will make my mistakes and imperfections less visible! I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it yet, but that’s ok. It can just stay there and look pretty!
Oh, and a little plug for my shop, the Little Fabric Store! Things have started better than what I was hoping for, but there’s still a long way to go!

binding – check out Wallis & MacCullach in the center of town (opposite John Lewis). I have never seen such an amazing range of bias bindings!
Yup, I’ve heard of them. I will have a look next time I’ll go to JL. :)
