Pour Maman

Mother’s Day in France is tomorrow. I had planned to make her a Madli stole, in her favourite light pink, but I simply ran out of time (and the idea of winding 900m of laceweight yarn by hand held me back, too – I should get myself a swift and a ball winder). I thought long and hard about what to get / make her. My love of crafts come from her and she’s a talented (if not very adventurous – but that’s more to do with the offering of yarns and patterns in France) knitter and an even more talented embroiderer.
So I thought first about getting her some knitting stuff, like some nice bamboo or light weight wood needles, some nice yarn also crossed my mind. But it’s nearly summer and my mother doesn’t knit in summer. She sometimes crochet, but she hasn’t done anything in crochet for some time. She did tell me that her project for this summer was to embroider a tablecloth for my youngest aunt, so I came up with the idea of making her a little sewing / embroidery pouch.

In the latest issue of Sew Hip!, there was a pattern for a passport holder which was just the right size and shape, but not exactly not what I wanted. So I used the pattern and created my own little thing for my mother. It is rather pretty.

The fabric is Wild Rose by Maywood Studio. The ribbon is leftover from my wedding, so it will be a nice reminder of this fantastic weekend.

Pour Maman - Inside
On the inside, I added a piece of cross-stitch linen which I have embroidered (Pour Maman – Mai 2010), which will hold her needles. I also created a little pocket to hold whatever little things she wants to transport.

I’ve used my mini sewing machine to make the pouch. I was pleased that I can almost sew straight. Now I wish my baby boy wouldn’t be so terrified by it! The pattern called for top-stitching, but instead, I used some embroidery floss and made a decorative running stitch around the whole thing.
I was pleased how it turned out: it’s not perfect, but it is decent! I can’t wait to hear what my mother think about it!

beautiful! and nice to hear the sewing machine is useful.

the quilts in your other posts are BEAUTIFUL! I’m almost inspired to try something similar to your strips one for my own front room – I’ve been looking for something to tie the various elements and colours together.
