As you know if you’ve been reading my blog, I have just started quilting, after many years of being tempted by this craft. I finally took the plunge a month or so ago. I had started a hexagon quilt, but it’s not the one I want to talk about today (note the “today”, because I’ll try to blog about it tomorrow, since I’ve made a lot of progress on this project).
I’m going to talk about my layered quilt (-top). It was my second foray into the world of quilting and I had decided to take it a step further by not following a pattern or a template. I had been inspired by some layered quilts out in the blogosphere, but I wanted something more “me”. I love when things are very “squared”, “symmetrical” and “even”. So I spent some time with graph paper and coloured pencils and came up with my own pattern.
My layered quilt top

I LOVE it. I love its simplicity, I love how the fabrics work together. I only used 2 fabrics per block of colours, simply because my jelly roll (Boutique by Chez Moi for Moda) only had 2 strips of the darker blue and 3 strips (2 of them being the same prints) of the red.
It was all hand sewn, which was probably a good thing for me: I’m not sure I would have been able to sew straight for 44 inches with a machine.
I have ordered some of the paisley print of this collection in orange and blue for the back. I’m going to do a pieced back, with some squares from the remnants of the strips.
For the quilting, I am going to use a variegated thread and probably do some simple flowery shapes. It’s going to be hand quilted.
When it’s finished, it’s going to live on our sofa, I think. I can see myself making many more of this quilt, maybe using just solids or just 1 main colour throughout.
It’s the first time I sew something that big. It’s my first quilt. Yes, I am very proud of myself! Ha!

WOW! Fantastic work missus, it looks lovely. xx
Thanks Spid! :)
Congratulations Malanie on your first finished quilt. It’s gorgeous. I’m impressed to read that you hand pieced it. It will look great with hand quilting as well. Hope you enjoy the Blogger’s Quilt Festival – Hugs Nat
Thanks Nat! Hand sewing was quite relaxing and easier for me to control those long seams. I’m a complete novice with machines!
I’m enjoying the festival! So many gorgeous quilts!
Really pretty design! I am so impressed you did it by hand – I don’t think I could sew straight by hand for that length, but I think I could on a machine!
By hand, it’s quite easy to follow the threads of the fabric. Mind you, I did move by 1 or 2 millimetres here and there, but overall, it looks pretty good!
Fab – can’t believe it is your first quilt.
love the mod rainbow look!
I LOVE this quilt! So simple and fresh. I can’t believe it’s only your second!!!!
Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for all the nice comments! :)
Interesting idea to work with. I had a couple of variations spring to mind as I was looking at the photograph :)
Your quilt ts turning out lovely! I love sewing without a pattern. I can’t believe it is your first quilt, beautifully done!
You should be proud of yourself! It’s a very cool quilt. There’s no greater since of satisfaction than making a quilt.
Nice job on your first quilt! Love it!
It’s beautiful! Love the rainbow effect- and it’s very impressive that you made your first quilt all by hand! Here’s to the enjoyment of making many more!
Awesome job! I love the rainbow colours and modern design!
Oh my, it looks amazing!!! You must be so pleased!! Can’t believe you sewed it all by hand, there’s no way I could get straight lines doing it by hand (not that I’ve got a machine anyway!)
Thanks all for your very kind comments! :)
Petit Filoux. I find it actually easier to sew straight by hand, because it’s slow. So it’s easier to follow the edge of the fabrics! ;)
Your first quilt is dynamite! Love how you grouped the colours. How good are the pre-cuts.
I enjoyed the pre-cuts, made it a lot easier for this project. Being a novice, I’m not sure I would have been as accurate had I cut all the strips myself.
like this a lot–nice that you figured it our yourself and love the colors.
Nice job on your first quilt! Love it!
Oh my gosh – you HAND-PIECED this??? Amazing! Congratulations to a beautiful quilt top, I truly like it.
I love your quilt top; what a great first finish!
Love this quilt. It’s very cool. Congrats!
oh i can’t wait to see the finished project. i love the pattern :)
