New Year

2009 has gone. It was one hell of a year: I’ve been made redundant, moved house, had a baby and rediscovered my love for all things crafts. If you had told me that a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. I would have hoped you were right, but I would not have think it was all possible!

2009 ended on an emotional roller-coaster, with the baby being just 3 weeks old. He is a handful, as all babies are for new parents, I suppose. The fear of doing it wrong has hit me pretty hard. I am just starting to relax a little bit about it and accept that what’s in the books / advices and the reality of an individual baby are pretty different and you just have to go along with things. We co-sleep, we expressed early on (he’s still on the breast, but he is getting 1-2 bottles of breastmilk a day, to give my breasts a break) and other things. And we are fine with it. The baby seems ok, that’s the most important thing, right?

That’s how we ended 2009 and how we are starting 2010. Well, actually, 2010 started with us taking the wee lad for an adventure: an impromptu picnic in the cold sun in our local park. We didn’t stay long, but it was fantastic to take the boy out for something that wasn’t hospital related! And he seems to enjoy riding in his pushchair so much, it is also a relief for us to not have to cuddle / carry / worry about him so much.

It’s a bit strange to think that next year, at this time, he will be a toddler who will be walking or just about to be.

On the other fronts, my husband has decided that I didn’t need to worry about going back to work. This is nice, because I am quite happy being a stay-at-home mum for the moment. I don’t know if that will last, but right now, I’d rather be home with the baby. And economically, it doesn’t make much sense to go back to work anyway: my whole salary would be eaten up by childminding costs.

I am looking at the Open University courses and qualifications, in case something would interest me. I would be interested in something related to fashion design (in the technical sense, like pattern design and the likes), but I don’t think they offer this kind of courses. I am looking still, to see if something else would take my fancy.

Crafts wise, I intend to keep knitting as much as possible. For the moment, I am happy if I can knit a row a day, but I guess that as the boy grows older, I will have a little bit more time to knit. I do intend to work on creating some patterns, see if I can come up with things and keep my brain busy.

Anyway, let’s not get carried away. Who knows what 2010 will bring us anyway?…
