Big boy’s scarf

Oddly enough, my husband loves knitwear and all things handmade for him. My mother offered him a blue jumper with a big red N on the front 2 Christmas ago and the poor thing is now completely worn out! He loved it that much.
So when I started knitting again seriously, he asked me to make him a scarf. I obliged!

It had to be blue, chunky and very wide and long. We looked around for a wool that he would like and found on Ebay some Sirdar Escape in Fever (which gives deep blue stripes) that he really liked. We ordered it and I started looking for patterns that would be manly enough.

Nothing I found was really catching my eyes. So when I received the wool, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. I started on the Diamonds scarf. While working on this project, I started to think that some ribbing would be nice, as long as it was different. I chose a diagonal 2×2 ribbing.
Row 1: sl1, k2, p2, k1
Row 2: sl1, k2, p3
Row 3: sl1, p1, k2, p1, k1
Row 4: sl1, k1, p2, k1, p1
Row 5: sl1, p2, k3
Row 6: sl1, p2, k2, p1
Row 7: sl1, p1, k2, p1, k1
Row 8: sl1, k1, p2, k1, p1
Repeat rows 1 to 8 until desired length is obtained. The first and last stitches of this pattern are not necessary, but I like to add them to make the scarf neater. Slipping the first stitch of a row is the best tip that my mum ever taught me! It makes for very clean edges.
I think the pattern is right: I’m doing it from memories and without the scarf to check. In any case, it’s a pretty simple pattern that I’m sure can be found in stitches dictionaries all over the interweb.

I am pretty happy with this choice of pattern as I find it works very well with the stripes from the wool. The boy seems to love it too. I have knitted about 70cms so far. I am aiming for at least 160cms. It is quite a pleasant and mindless knitting as the pattern is dead easy. I can watch the telly without fearing of missing a stitch!
